Tension is building up in the Imo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, following a purported scheduled election of the union on Saturday December 22 ,2018, which does not comply with the provisions of the constitution of the union.
In a petition written to the Commissioner of Police Imo State Command, dated December 17, 2018, and copied to the Department of State Services, DSS, the journalists who are also contesting elective positions in Imo NUJ, accused the National President of NUJ, Comrade Christopher Isiguzo of trying to instigate crisis in the union in Imo by removing the secretary of the Credentials Committee for the election, Vivian Otti Esq. arbitrarily and rather instructing the Credentials Committee chairman, Eze Adiukwu to ”announce a new conduct of election on December 15, 2018 through an online post that Imo NUJ election will take place on December 22, 2018 without recourse to the union’s our Constitution which provided that on fresh election of a state council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, six (6) weeks should be set aside to take care of electoral duties, petitions and objections”.
The journalists equally accused the national president of setting aside the conclusion of the July 14, 2018 stalemated election that has already produced three persons who emerged unopposed, describing Isiguzo’s action as a desperate ploy to impose his preferred candidates on the union.
Imo journalists who had earlier considered storming the streets in protest, appealed to the CP to stop the unconstitutional election as scheduled for Saturday December22, and to also call the NUJ president to order. The journalists said the national president should be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order resulting from the proposed electon of Saturday.
They also informed the police that over 200 practicing journalists in Imo have vowed to stop the purported election on Saturday by adopting their own style if nothing is done to that effect. While calling on the police to establish investigation and interrogation on the matter.
Meanwhile, Imo state commission of police Mr. Dasulki Galadanchi has cautioned the NUJ caretaker committee members led by Francis Ebonugwo to never to hold any election on Saturday(tomorrow).
The police boss who said this during a meeting with aspirants in the NUJ botched election on Thursday, advised the national secretariat of NUJ to come to Imo state council and maintain peace.
Consequently, the police commissioner in company of some of his top police officers asked that the purported illegal election should be put on hold till further notice.
Those in attendance during the Thursday meeting include; Elder Lambert Ojukwu, Chief Sunny Ejiogu, Comr, C.C Ekweghiariri, Chief Chris Akaraonye, Vitalis Iwueze, Sir Amby Uneze and Francis Ebonugwo
